Choose the Right Size

This hen mating saddle is available in Small/Bantam, Medium/Skinny, and Standard. Choose the size that sits flat across the hen’s back without pinching, shifting excessively, or restricting her wings and normal movement. Body shape can vary even among hens of the same breed, so use our hen-saddle fit and safety guide to assess the fit on the individual bird. How to Fit the Hen Mating Saddle

Many hens need a little time to adjust to the feel of a chicken saddle. Installation is usually easiest after dark while the flock is calmly roosting.

1. Unfasten the saddle’s snaps and gently remove the hen from the roost.
2. While seated, place the hen in your lap facing you, with her legs resting between yours. Support her keel and body without squeezing.
3. Place the denim side down against her back and allow the elastic straps to drape over the tops of her wings alongside her neck.
4. Lift one wing slightly, bring the two snaps together on the underside of the saddle, and fasten them. Repeat on the opposite side.
5. Confirm that the saddle lies flat, the straps are not twisted, and the hen can extend her wings and move comfortably. Return her to the roost so she can adjust overnight.

Daily Fit and Safety Checks

Check both the saddle and the skin beneath it every day. Remove the saddle if it becomes wet, dirty, damaged, or restrictive, or if the elastic or snaps begin to rub. A correctly fitted saddle should allow the hen to walk, eat, drink, preen, and dust bathe normally.

Do not place a saddle over an active or untreated wound. If the skin is bleeding, swollen, infected, or otherwise injured, separate the hen from further mating pressure as appropriate and seek qualified poultry-care or veterinary guidance. Once the skin is healthy enough for protective coverage, the saddle may be worn during feather regrowth as long as daily checks confirm a safe fit.

Cleaning and Returns

Remove the saddle before laundering. Machine wash and dry it, then inspect the fabric, stitching, elastic, and snaps before putting it back on the hen. Replace the saddle if any component is worn or damaged.
