Denim Chicken Saddle for Temporary Back Coverage

The Hen Couture® denim chicken saddle is a washable back cover for a standard-size hen. Sometimes called a hen saddle, hen apron, or chicken apron, it places a fabric layer over the back where repeated rooster mating or feather pecking can wear feathers and expose skin.

This saddle is intended for temporary protective coverage on a hen whose skin is healthy enough to be covered. It does not treat an injury, cause feathers to regrow, or replace changes needed to reduce excessive mating or flock pecking.

When a Hen Saddle Can Help

A properly fitted saddle can help shield healthy skin and regrowing feathers from additional rubbing while the source of the feather loss is addressed. It may be useful when one hen receives repeated attention from a rooster or when flock mates continue pecking an already-thin area.

The saddle covers the central back but does not provide the extra-wide upper-wing coverage found on some mating-saddle designs. Choose the style that best matches the individual hen’s affected area and body shape.

Fit for Standard-Size Hens

This product is designed as a standard size for most average hens. It may not fit bantams, Silkies, very small birds, or very large breeds. Breed labels alone cannot determine fit because hens of the same breed can have different body shapes.

The saddle should lie flat along the back without bunching, sliding far to one side, pinching at the wing bases, or pressing against the tail. The elastic should hold the fabric in place without restricting wing movement. If the saddle shifts repeatedly or the elastic appears tight or loose, remove it and choose a different size or design.

How to Put On the Denim Hen Saddle

Application is often easiest after dark while the flock is calm on the roost. Work slowly and support the hen’s body throughout the process.

1. Hold the hen securely with her breast and feet supported.
2. Place the saddle flat on her back with the pocket and embroidery facing upward and the ruffle toward the tail.
3. Gently lift one wing only as far as needed and guide the elastic loop behind it without pulling feathers.
4. Repeat with the second wing, then make sure both loops lie flat and are not twisted.
5. Set the hen down in a safe area and observe her walking and wing movement before returning her to normal activity.

Daily Fit and Safety Checks

Check the saddle, elastic, and the skin beneath it every day. Confirm that the fabric remains centered and dry and that the wing loops are not rubbing, twisted, or restrictive. Remove the saddle if it becomes wet, heavily soiled, damaged, or difficult to keep in position.

Do not place the saddle over an active or untreated wound. Bleeding, swelling, discharge, heat, odor, or other signs of injury require appropriate separation from further mating or pecking pressure and qualified poultry-care or veterinary guidance. Once the skin is healthy enough for protective coverage, continue daily checks while the saddle is used.

Do not rely on a chicken saddle for predator protection. Use secure housing, covered runs where appropriate, supervision, and other controls suited to the predators in your area.

Cleaning and Ongoing Use

Remove the saddle from the hen before washing. Machine wash it as needed, then air dry completely. Before reuse, inspect the denim, stitching, pocket, ruffle, and elastic loops. Replace the saddle if the fabric is torn, the elastic is stretched or frayed, or any decorative component is loose.

How long a hen should wear a saddle depends on fit, condition, weather, and the reason it is being used. Continue observing the hen rather than relying on a fixed schedule. Remove the saddle periodically for inspection and stop using it if the bird cannot walk, perch, preen, dust bathe, eat, or drink normally.
