What This Heating Plate Temperature Controller Does

The WPR-USA heating plate temperature controller is an inline power regulator for compatible WP-series chick brooder heating plates. It lets you reduce or increase the electrical output sent to the plate from 20% to 100%, providing more control than plugging the plate directly into the outlet at full output.

This accessory changes plate output only. It does not measure the temperature inside the brooder, display degrees, or automatically maintain a selected temperature. Plate height, chick age and size, room conditions, drafts, and chick behavior still need to be considered throughout brooding.

Compatible WP-Series Heating Plates

The controller label identifies the following compatible models:

  • WP-25USA
  • WP-30USA
  • WP-40USA
  • WP-50USA
  • WP-60USA

Confirm the model and electrical rating printed on your heating plate before connecting it. The total load must not exceed 100 watts. The controller is intended for suitable non-luminous heating plates and is not a universal control for every heater or electrical appliance. The heating plate is sold separately.

How to Connect the Inline Controller

  1. Unplug the heating plate and inspect the plate cord, plug, controller, and receptacle. Do not use damaged equipment.
  2. Confirm that the heating plate is a compatible WP-USA model and does not exceed the controller’s 100-watt maximum load.
  3. Plug the controller’s male plug into a suitable 110–115VAC outlet.
  4. Plug the heating plate into the controller’s female receptacle.
  5. Select an output level with the dial, then continue to observe the chicks and adjust the plate height and output as needed.

Keep the controller, plugs, receptacle, and other electrical connections dry. Arrange cords where chicks cannot become entangled and where feed, litter, or spilled water will not interfere with the connection. Follow the current instructions supplied with both the controller and heating plate.

For help planning the complete enclosure—including heat, bedding, feed, water, and brooder space—see Everything You Need for a Brooder for Chicks.

Adjusting Output for Your Chicks

The controller regulates output across a 20–100% range. Its face has a dial numbered 1 through 7, but those numbers are adjustment references—not Fahrenheit or Celsius temperatures. Turning the dial toward the higher end increases the power sent to the plate; turning it toward the lower end reduces it.

Make changes gradually and reassess the chicks after changing the controller or plate height. Chicks should be able to move beneath the plate, rest, and leave freely to reach feed and water. Persistent crowding, loud peeping, or avoidance of the plate can signal that the complete brooder setup needs attention, but those behaviors may also reflect drafts, crowding, illness, or another condition. Check the entire environment rather than relying on the dial alone.

Why the Heating Plate Light May Blink

The WPR-USA regulates heat by pulsing the power sent to the connected plate. At a reduced setting, the heating plate’s red indicator light may therefore blink as power cycles. A lower output produces a slower cycle, while a higher output produces a quicker cycle. At the full-output setting, the plate indicator may remain on continuously.

The blinking described here is the indicator on the connected heating plate, not a separate temperature display or indicator on the controller. It does not show a measured brooder temperature.

Power Regulator vs. Thermostat

A thermostat uses a temperature sensor to switch or modulate heat in response to a selected temperature. This brooder heating plate controller has no temperature probe, thermometer, or degree-based setpoint. It regulates the percentage of electrical output instead.

For that reason, an output setting cannot guarantee a particular temperature beneath the plate. Continue to follow the heating plate manufacturer’s height and setup guidance, observe chick access and behavior, and make appropriate adjustments as the chicks grow and room conditions change.

Important Use Limits

  • Voltage: use with the labeled 110–115VAC supply.
  • Maximum load: do not exceed 100 watts.
  • Heat source: use only with a compatible non-luminous heating plate.
  • Do not use with heat lamps: the pulsed output is not intended for ordinary infrared lamps or other lighted heat sources.
  • Keep connections dry: do not use a damaged, wet, opened, or modified controller.
  • Observe the brooder: the controller does not replace routine checks of chicks, equipment, feed, water, litter, and brooder conditions.

Heating Plate Temperature Controller FAQs

What does this heating plate controller adjust?

It regulates the electrical output sent to a compatible WP-series brooder heating plate from 20% to 100%. Lower settings send less power to the plate, while higher settings send more. It does not directly set a temperature in degrees.

Is this controller a thermostat or thermometer?

No. The WPR-USA has no temperature probe, thermometer, digital display, or degree-based setpoint. It is an inline power-output regulator, so chick behavior, plate height, and the complete brooder environment still need to be checked.

Which heating plates are compatible?

The controller label lists WP-25USA, WP-30USA, WP-40USA, WP-50USA, and WP-60USA heating plates. Confirm the model and rating printed on your plate before connecting it, and do not exceed the controller’s 100-watt maximum load.

How do I connect the controller?

Plug the controller into a suitable 110–115VAC outlet, then plug the compatible heating plate into the controller’s receptacle. Inspect the equipment first, keep every electrical connection dry, and follow the current instructions supplied with both devices.

Why does the heating plate’s red light blink?

At reduced settings, the controller pulses the power sent to the plate, so the connected heating plate’s red indicator may blink. The cycle becomes quicker at higher output and may remain on continuously at full output. This is the plate’s indicator—not a controller temperature reading.

Can I use this controller with a heat lamp?

No. Use it only with a compatible non-luminous heating plate. Its pulsed output is not intended for ordinary infrared lamps or other lighted heat sources.

What are the voltage and maximum wattage?

The WPR-USA label specifies 110–115VAC and a maximum load of 100 watts. Do not use a connected device that exceeds that rating.

How should I adjust the setting as chicks grow?

Make gradual output changes and continue adjusting the heating plate height as the chicks grow. Observe whether every chick can move beneath the plate, rest, and leave freely. The numbered 1–7 dial is an adjustment reference, not a temperature scale, so do not rely on the dial alone.
